School Visits with Eldritch Black

Spooky stories, strange creatures, and a peek behind the curtain at how books are made. I bring the Weirdbey Island series to life with readings, Q&A, and hands-on creative writing designed to get every student writing, including the reluctant ones.

Visits are available in person and virtually, for 3rd grade through middle school. The sweet spot is 4th and 5th grade.

What a visit can include

• An assembly with readings from Weirdbey Island and a lively Q&A
• Classroom creative writing workshops, up to seven in a day
• The monster-creation workshop, where students build their own creature using all five senses. It’s a favorite with 4th and 5th graders, and teachers like the descriptive writing it produces.
• Boss Battle, where the class becomes a team of video game designers and builds a boss together, voting at every step: what it looks like, where it lurks, what it wants, why, and what it secretly fears. Students discover what every good storyteller knows: a villain with a reason is scarier, and that reason is how you beat it. It’s a hit with gamers and reluctant writers alike.
• A book signing, with signed copies at a discount for students, teachers and families

Visit options

Reading visit (1 hour)
A reading from the Weirdbey Island series followed by student questions. On Whidbey Island these visits are complimentary. They work best when the school can arrange a book sale, but there’s no obligation.

Half-day (3 hours) or full-day (6 hours) workshop visits
An assembly plus classroom workshops, tailored to your grades and schedule.

Virtual visits
The same spooky fun, delivered to classrooms anywhere in the world.

Off-island visits
